D4vd - Here With Me

Singer-songwriter and producer d4vd (real name David Anthony Burke ) crafted this dreamy, tropical number out of a reworked, key-shifted sample of South Korean producer Blueday's "Snowday". I gotta say that while finding that out caught me completely by surprise considering how original the song sounds , I'm not complaining at all. Sampling is an art form unto itself and can make for amazing music if done right, while also shining a spotlight on lesser-known artists who deserve the recognition.    D4vd did an immaculate job on the production here and made the sample his own, turning a slow, romantic, wintry song into something that sounds just like the video thumbnail above looks, if that makes any sense. With a lethargic  soft rock -infused bedroom pop beat and bittersweet, romantic lyrics about lasting love, listening to this makes me feel like I'm on a tropical island, watching the night creep in with the one I love as the sun sets over the shimmering sea.  ...

Laufey - I Wish You Love

Laufey (pronounced LOY-VEY ) is kind of an anomaly in the modern pop landscape, and I mean that in the best possible sense.  If you’re on TikTok, you most certainly know her, and if you don’t, allow me to fill you in. She’s an Icelandic-born singer-songwriter who makes music that infuses the old-fashioned jazz of the Great American Songbook with modern styles like indie and  bedroom pop. Her musical output is truly one of a kind, and I’m so glad she’s getting the recognition she deserves in the mainstream, appearing on late-night shows like Jimmy Kimmel Live and being on a world tour as of my writing this.  One of her best-known songs is this lovely cover of the jazz standard “ I Wish You Love .” Like much of her work at that time, it combines bedroom pop music with jazz influences, resulting in something that sounds both modern and retro simultaneously.
